Antonio è un genio. Per me un genio è colui o colei che vede le cose da un’altra prospettiva e riesce con semplicità a condividerla con gli altri. Antonio decisamente appartiene a questa categoria. Io no, ma per qualche ragione a me sconosciuta entro in contatto con diverse persone che appartengono alla categorie dei geni, e la cosa mi rende particolarmente orgoglioso. Magari capiterà l’occasione di farvene conoscere altri.
Quando ho conosciuto Antonio eravamo due giovani sottotenenti, quindi parecchi anni fa, e subito mi sono accorto che Antonio vedeva le cose in maniera diversa, più semplice, più facile, è riuscito a togliere dalla mia mente tutte quelle domande a cui non per forza bisogna trovare una risposta, ho un ricordo meraviglioso di quel periodo.
Antonio is nothing short of a genius. A genius to me is a person who sees the world from a different perspective and is capable of sharing it with others with knowledge and utmost simplicity. Yes, Antonio definitely belongs to this category. I don’t, but for some reason I keep coming across geniuses in my life, which makes me particularly proud. Hopefully I will introduce you to more of them soon. When I first met Antonio we were two young second lieutenants, it was many years ago and I realized he was different from the get go. His way of thinking was simple and easy. He was always able to calm me down and help me get rid of all of those questions that don’t always necessarily need answers. I have wonderful memories about that period of my life.

We often remind one another how blessed we were, and still are, to have had each other back then!
Un’esperienza del genere non poteva che cementare la nostra amicizia. Infatti a distanza di trent’ anni non è cambiato nulla tra di noi e poi siamo legati a doppia mandata dal nostro amore per Roma. E allora “unaromanainamerica” è il posto ideale per fare qualche domanda ad Antonio e farvelo conoscere. Per realizzare questa intervista ho preferito incontrarlo di persona, andare a casa sua. Entrare nella sua casa mi ha sempre messo di buonumore, non appena varchi la porta sei invaso dall’energia positiva che appartiene a lui, alla sua famiglia ed alle sue opere sparse per tutta casa.
Sharing the experience of military life together really helped us build a strong foundation of a friendship we still cherish thirty years later. Another passion we have in common is our profound love for our beloved city: Rome, that is. That’s why I thought that Una Romana in America was the perfect platform to ask Antonio a few questions and get you all to know him better. To make this project happen I decided to see him in person. Visiting his place always puts me in a great mood because as soon as I step foot inside I am welcomed by the usual positive energy that is so typical of him, his family and all of his art found everywhere in his house.

Ciao Antonio, first and foremost, tell us who you are
My name is Antonio Masullo. I majored in Graphic Design and Illustration. I’m married to Carolina and I have two wonderful boys: Adriano and Massimo. Strictly Roman names, of course.
Cos’è l’arte per te?
E’ un modo di trasmettere su qualsiasi superficie le mie idee, cercando di creare un contatto emozionale con coloro che guardano o posseggono le mie opere. Le mie fonti d’ispirazione sono la strada, la spiaggia, il mare, la natura, in poche parole tutto quello che mi circonda. L’idea può venire da qualsiasi cosa.
What is art to you? How would you define it?
It’s freedom to express my ideas on any surface available to me. It’s trying to establish an emotional connection with those who own and / or are interested in my art work. I find inspiration in the street, beach, sea, nature and everything else I’m surrounded by. Ideas can come out of nowhere, really.
Perché questo forte rapporto con Roma nelle tue opere?
Per il grande amore che provo per questa città, per la sua stratigrafia, per i suoi colori e per il significato storico-artistico che trasmette, che è poi tutto ciò che ha influenzato intimamente il mio lavoro.
Why so much of Rome in your art work?
Because I love my city so very deeply. The topography of this region, its colors, its art and its history are all factors that tremendously influence what I do everyday.
Hai scritto anche dei libri, come sono nati?
Un po’ per caso , sono partito dalle illustrazioni, e solo in seguito ho aggiunto le parole. Da qui sono nati

You wrote a few books. Tell us about them
I started out trying to create sketches and illustrations. Later on I’ve built a story around them. With this method I wrote the following books:
Papà istruzioni per l’uso ( a manual for first time fathers )
Ho visto cose che voi Romani ( an alternative tour guide to Rome seen through the eyes of Nicholas Green )
Caro Sindaco, tu che hai super poteri ( the story of a city according to children and their innocence )
Naia, mio papà da giovane era nonno ( a short summery that describes the military life )
Ora so che vai per condomini a raccontare la storia di Roma.. insomma, un cantastorie moderno, perché?
L’idea è nata per la voglia di condividere aneddoti e curiosità di Roma che non tutti conoscono e allora perché non sfruttare le scale condominiali per raccontare tutto ciò attraverso una cartina da me disegnata? Ed ecco lì, il cantastorie di condominio.
I heard you’ve been going from building to building to talk about the history of Rome. What a modern storyteller you are. Why do you do that?
The idea was born out of my excitement to reveal Rome’s funny bits, curiosities and surprising facts not everyone is aware of so, I thought to myself ” what better way to talk about all that through a map drawn by me, while sitting on a building staircase?”. That’s where the ” door to door ” storyteller’s idea comes from
