Oggi vi racconterò una favola, di quelle belle, a lieto fine. Non una di quelle classiche però, ma una dei nostri giorni, in cui la protagonista è l’italiana Wanda, che seguendo il cuore, ha trovato il suo principe in una terra lontana. Ho conosciuto @sneeprindsessen (vi prego, ditemi che anche voi avete problemi a pronunciare questo nome e non mi sentirò più così stana) su Instagram e da un suo commento a una mia foto, non ho più mollato l’idea d’intervistarla. Da romantica quale sono non potevo certo lasciarmi sfuggire questa storia d’amore dei nostri tempi e spero che conquisterà anche voi.

Today I’m going to tell you about a fairytale, one of those beautiful ones with a happy ending. Not the classic fairy tale but a modern one in which the main character is the Italian Wanda, who found her Prince Charming while following her dreams, in a place very far away. I met @sneeprindsessen ( please tell me you have the hardest time trying to pronounce this name as well so I won’t feel weird ) on Instagram and, since her very first comment on one of my pictures, I’ve been obsessing over the idea of interviewing her. I’m a hopeless romantic and I couldn’t pass the opportunity to hear all about this love story of our time that I’m sure will conquer your heart as it did mine.

Ciao Wanda, da dove vieni e come sei arrivata in Svezia? Fortuna, scelta ponderata o destino?
Ciao Alessandra, io sono piemontese e ho abitato un po’ a Torino e un po’ in un microscopico paese in collina in provincia di Cuneo. Siccome la vita di paesino mi è sempre stata stretta, ho fatto di tutto per andarmene. A soli 16 anni, con la firma di mia zia (tutore legale, visto che i miei se ne sono andati un po’ troppo presto) sono andata a Milano per lavorare come modella. È stato duro lavorare e continuare il liceo allo stesso tempo. Poi ho iniziato l’università e sono andata per un po’ a Londra. Dopodiché è arrivato il viaggio che mi ha cambiato la vita e che mi ha portato in Svezia. Ho vinto una borsa di studio con l’università e sono andata a vivere a Copenhagen (la mia amata città). Li, ho conosciuto uno svedese, il motivo per cui oggi ti scrivo da Malmö, Svezia.
Direi che è il destino che mi ha portato qui. Avevo un progetto che mi stava portando a New York ma dopo il 9/11 ho cambiato rotta optando per i paesi scandinavi.

Hi Wanda, where are you from and how did you end up in Sweden? Was it luck, careful consideration or just destiny?

Hi Alessandra, I’m from Piemonte and I lived between Turin and a little bitty town on the hills in the province of Cuneo. Life in a small town has always been tight for me, so I did everything I could to leave. At the age of 16 ( with my aunt’s permission, who was my legal guardian as my parents passed to a better life too soon ) I moved to Milan to pursue a career as a model. It was hard working and being in high school at the same time. When I was in college I moved to London for a while and after that, there it was, the trip that changed my life forever and that brought me all the way to Sweden. I won a scholarship, while I was in college, and moved to Copenhagen ( my beloved city ) where I met a Swedish guy, the reason why I’m writing you from Malmö, Sweden, today. I think it’s safe to say that destiny brought me here. I was working on moving to New York, but, after 9/11 I changed my plans and opted for Scandinavia instead.

Quando hai conosciuto tuo marito cosa ti ha fatto capire che era quello giusto da seguirlo fino alla sua terra?
Pensa che l’ho conosciuto una sera in cui ero ad una festa con un “date”, un ragazzo svizzero. Lí ho incontrato Fredrik, un ingegnere che mi ha recitato a memoria un sonetto di Shakespear (shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?)… li ho avuto una strana sensazione….e pensa che non ho mai creduto nel colpo di fulmine. Comunque, siamo diventati una coppia praticamente da subito e, dopo sei mesi esatti, mi ha chiesto di sposarlo.

When you first met your husband what made you believe he was the one to the point where you decided to move to his country?

What’s funny is I met him one night I was at a party with a date, a guy from Switzerland. There he was, Fredrik, an engineer who played a sonnet by Shakespeare to me ( shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? ) I felt something moving inside of me that night and that’s strange because I never believed in love at first sight. Anyway, we became a couple pretty much right away and, after exactly six months, he asked me to marry him

Dove vi siete sposati? Con  Quale rito?
Ovviamente ci siamo sposati in Italia, nel mio microscopico paesino che, a non crederci, ha il santuario con la cupola più grande d’Europa (dopo S. Pietro). Rito cattolico (solo per la gioia della nonna) e tanti invitati provenienti da ben otto nazionalità diversi.

Where did you get married? Which tradition did you go with for the ceremony?

We got married in Italy, of course, in my little bitty hometown, that, believe it or not, hosts a sanctuary known for having the biggest cupola in Europe ( after St. Peter’s ). We had a Catholic wedding ceremony ( just to make grandma happy ) and many guests coming from eight different countries.
Dev’essere stato davvero interessante, nonché estremamente romantico. Tu e tuo marito avete una dolcissima bambina con un nome tipicamente nordico. Parlerà italiano? Come comunicate in famiglia?
La nostra bambina, tanto desiderata, sognata e aspettata per 7 lunghi anni, porta il nome della scrittrice svedese di Pippicalzelunghe. Nome che si pronuncia senza problemi sia in italiano sia in svedese. Ma abbiamo scelto anche un secondo nome, Margherita, come la mia super nonna che mi ha fatto da madre fin da quando ero piccola.

Per quanto riguarda le lingue, io sono linguista e faccio ricerca proprio nell’ambito del bilinguismo, quindi, nessuno meglio di me può sapere quanto è importante parlare al proprio figlio solo la propria lingua madre. Io le parlo solo italiano e mio marito le parla solo svedese. Inoltre all’asilo si parla svedese, quindi l’italiano rimane la lingua debole già da subito.
Io e mio marito abbiamo attraversato diverse fasi linguistiche. All’inizio solo inglese, l’unica lingua in comune. Poi dopo il mio trasferimento in Svezia, si parlava solo svedese. Adesso è da circa 5 anni che si parla solo italiano in casa. Mio marito ha fatto tanti corsi serali per imparare l’italiano e ora posso dire che è fluente.

It must have been interesting, let alone very romantic. You and your husband have a sweet little girl with a typical Nordic name, Astrid. Will she speak Italian? In which language do you communicate at home?

Our precious daughter, whom we love dearly, was named after the Swedish author of Pippi Longstocking. It’s a name that’s perfectly pronounced in both Italian and Swedish. We also chose a middle name for her, though, Margherita, like my amazing grandmother who’s been a mother to me since I was a little girl. As far as languages go, I’m a linguist and I do researches on bilingualism therefore no one better than me knows how important it is to speak to my child in our mother tongue. I speak to her only in Italian and my husband only in Swedish. They speak Swedish in kindergarten too, so Italian is already the weak language anyway. My husband and I went through different language phases over the years. Just English at the beginning of our relationship, which was the only language we had in common back then. After I moved to Sweden we started speaking Swedish. Now, 5 years later, we only speak Italian at home. My husband took many evening classes in order to learn Italian and now I can finally say he’s quite fluent in it.

A quale cibo della cucina svedese non sai proprio resistere?
Le Kanellbullar (cinnemonbuns), solo il profumo di cannella mi fa impazzire!! Poi bisogna menzionare il salmone affumicato e le aringhe.

To which Swedish food you absolutely can’t say no to?

I love cinnamon buns. The smell of cinnamon drives me crazy. I also love smoked salmon and herring.
Quando all’Università  ho studiato il regista Ingmar Bergman, che per me resta uno dei più grandi, una cosa che mi è rimasta in mente è la depressione e l’alto tasso di suicidi che c’era in Svezia. È ancora cosí? Come combattete la depressione?
In realtà il primato dei suicidi ce l’hanno la Finlandia e il Giappone 😉 Comunque è normale che la gente si deprima, specie se vivi a nord, dove vedi il sole (mi correggo, la luce) un’ora al giorno. In compenso in estate c’è sempre luce, anche all’una di notte (e non riesci a dormire se non copri le finestre con tendoni neri). Sono stata al nord un paio d’anni fa e vedere il sole fermo all’orizzonte all’una di notte mi ha quasi fatto venire le lacrime agli occhi .
Noi per ricaricare le batterie facciamo un viaggio al caldo ogni inverno. Un anno siamo stati un mese intero in Tailandia, poi abbiamo provato le isole Canarie.

When I was in college I studied Ingmar Bergman, still one of the very best to me, and depression and the high suicide rate in Sweden are two subjects that stuck in my head for all these years. Is that still the same? How is depression fought?

Actually Finland and Japan are on top of the list 🙂 It’s normal to feel depressed if you live up north and you see the sun ( correction: light, not sun ) only for one hour a day. On the other hand, during the summer is always daylight, even at 1 in the morning ( it’s impossible to sleep unless we cover our windows with thick, black curtains ). I traveled up north a couple of years ago and seeing the sun sitting on the horizon at 1am almost brought tears to my eyes. To recharge our batteries we take a trip to the beach every year. One year we spent a whole month in Thailand and another time we visited the Canary Islands.
Quali tradizioni tue fanno ora parte di tuo marito e quali sue hai fatto tue?
Io ho “adottato” la tradizione di Midsommar (mezza estate) che si celebra la terza settimana di Giugno, attorno al 21. Poi ho accettato che devo festeggiare Natale il 24 e che devo aprire i regali lo stesso giorno senza aspettare la mezzanotte.
Mio marito in compenso ha accettato che si celebri il mio Natale il 25, quindi il 24 si festeggia con cibo svedese e il 25 con quello italiano.

Which traditions did you pass on to your husband and which ones he passed on to you?

I embraced the Midsummer tradition which is celebrated the third week of June ( around the 21st ). I also accepted the fact that Christmas is celebrated on December 24th and that I have to unwrap my presents on that day without waiting until midnight. My husband accepted to celebrate Christmas on December 25th therefore on the 24th we celebrate the Swedish way and the next day the Italian way.

Avete mai pensato di trasferirvi in Italia?
No, non abbiamo mai neanche sfiorato l’idea. Quando ci siamo conosciuti Fredrik non parlava italiano e aveva già un lavoro. Poi io volevo veramente vivere all’estero.  Adesso mio marito è presidente di un’organizzazione che è simile all’Unione Europea ma che i occupa solo dei paesi nordici (che sono 8 ma pochi lo sanno) e quindi in Italia non saprebbe che fare.

Have you ever discussed moving to Italy?

No, it never crossed our minds. When we first met, Fredrik didn’t speak any Italian at all and he had a job. I also wanted to live abroad, so that worked out perfectly for us. Now my husband is the president of an organization similar to the European Union, which only involves Nordic countries ( 8 of them in total, but not too many people know that ) and he wouldn’t know what to do should we move back to Italy.
Che cosa significa il tuo nickname Instagram? Perché lo hai scelto?
Già da piccola leggevo le fiabe di Andersen e quando mi sono trovata a Copenhagen ho studiato danese per poterle leggere in lingua originale. La mia preferita è proprio Sneeprindsessen (la principessa di neve). Molti dei miei amici mi chiamano così.

What does your Instagram nickname mean?

Why did you choose it? I started reading Andersen’s fairy tales at a very young age and when I lived in Copenhagen I studied Danish to be able to read them in original language. My favorite is Sneeprindsessen ( the snow princess ). Many of my friends call me that.
