Credevate forse che me ne fossi dimenticata? Pensavate magari che avessi rinunciato al mio giro virtuale degli Stati Uniti d’America? E invece eccomi qui a illustrarvi altri dieci Stati americani che ho esplorato ancora una volta insieme ai miei amici di Facebook. Mi scuso immediatamente per aver rimandato cosÍ a lungo, ma sapete, essendoci stato di mezzo il Natale, non potevo non concentrarmi sul periodo più magico dell’anno e rimandare questo argomento, seppure a me a cuore, in un altro momento. Mi capite, non è vero? Sappiate però che il gioco degli Stati (cosí l’ho chiamato su Facebook) mi piace proprio tanto, soprattutto quando vedo che anche voi partecipate entusiasti e divertiti. Anche stavolta ho ricevuto molti commenti e diverse foto, specialmente per alcuni Stati in particolare. Per altri Stati invece non ho avuto molte informazioni. Non preoccupatevi però perché ho studiato. Anche stavolta poi, ho seguito il mio personale ordine. Spero non vi dispiacerà.
Did you think I was going to forget? Did you really believe I gave up on my virtual journey across the United States of America? Not at all, in fact here I am again to show you the next 10 US states I explored with the help of my Facebook friends. First off, I would like to apologize for taking my sweet time to write this article, but you know, the Christmas Holidays kept me totally focused on the most magical time of the year, and, even though I love writing articles like this one, I had no choice but put it on a side for a later time. You guys understand, don’t you? Just know that the game of the states ( that’s what I named it on Facebook ) really tickles my fancy, especially when I see that you all are excited and have fun participating in it as well. Even this time around I gathered a lot of info and photos from my friends about a few states, while for others I couldn’t, but no worries: I did my homework and, just like the first time, I followed a specific order: my own. Hope you don’t mind.
MARYLAND (MD)
Capitale: Annapolis
Soprannome: Stato della vecchia linea/Old Line State
Uccello: Oriole di Baltimora/Baltimore Oriole
Fiore: Black-eyed susan
Di questo Stato mi avete detto che è famoso l’acquario, la torta di granchio, le città, tra cui Annapolis, Baltimora e Ocean City. Mi è stato ricordato che a Baltimora si contende la “Preakness Stakes” la corsa dei cavalli che accade il terzo Sabato di Maggio. Si tratta della seconda gara della Triple Crown che si tiene due settimane dopo il famoso Kentucky Derby e precede di tre settimane la Belmont Stakes. Questa gara è denominata “La corsa per Black-eyed Susan” perché intorno al collo del vincitore viene messa una coperta di fiori gialli , i fiori dello Stato del Maryland.
I have been told this state is famous for its National Aquarium, its crab cakes and its cities such as Annapolis, Baltimore and Ocean City. I was also informed that every year, the horse race “Preakness Stakes” is held in Baltimore, on the third Saturday in May. It’s the second leg of the Triple Crown that is run two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes. The race has been named after the official flower of the state of Maryland, the Black-eyed Susan, because the winner will wear a blanket of yellow flowers around his neck.
WEST VIRGINIA (WV)
Capitale: Charleston
Soprannome: Stato della Montagna/Mountain State

West Virginia è ricordata per le montagne (altrimenti non sarebbe quello il soprannome, immagino). Il feudo Hatfield-McCoy fu la disputa di due famiglie, Hatfield e McCoy tra il 1863 e il 1891 per il dominio della terra. Ci sono diversi parchi nazionali e molti musei storici.
West Virginia is known for its mountains ( or else it wouldn’t have that nickname, I assume ). The Hatfield – McCoy feud involved the two families between 1863 and 1891 in a land dispute. West Virginia is also home of several National Parks and History Museums.
VIRGINIA (VA)
Capitale: Richmond
Soprannome: il vecchio dominio/Old Dominion
Uccello: Cardinale/Cardinal
Fiore: Dogwood americano/Flowering Dogwood
Sembra che i miei amici di Facebook conoscano piuttosto bene questo Stato e a dire il vero anch’io ci sono stata di passaggio. Hanno nominato George Washington Mount Vernon, ovvero la meravigliosa residenza di George Washington primo presidente degli Stati Uniti. C’è una parte denominata “Horse country” per tutte le fattorie di cavalli che ci sono. Proprio qui, viene disputata la “chincoteague pony swim” che è una gara di nuoto di ponies. Ci sono molte città coloniali e località storiche tra cui Williamsburg e Jamestown. Virginia Beach, Blue Ridge Mountains sono altri luoghi molto visitati. Ancora i parchi divertimento Busch Gardens e the Arlington Cemetery, il cimitero storico dove sono sepolti i combattenti in guerra e alcuni dei presidenti statunitensi. Un piatto famoso del posto, se non siete vegetariani come me, è il Green Pig. Se invece anche voi non consumare carne, potete buttarvi sulle noccioline, visto che le migliori arachidi si trovano proprio qui.
Apparently my Facebook friends know a lot about this state. I drove through it before. They mentioned George Washington Mount Vernon, as known as the amazing estate of the first president of the United States, George Washington. Virginia is also Horse Country because of the many extended stretches of lands entirely dedicated to horses and horse stables. The Chincoteague Pony Swim is held here, There are several colonial and historical cities in Virginia like Williamsburg and Jamestown to mention a few. Virginia Beach and Blue Ridge Mountains attract a lot of tourism as well. Other attractions include theme Park Busch Gardens and Arlington National Cemetery where numerous veterans as well as a couple of US presidents are buried at.
If, unlike me, you’re not a vegetarian a good restaurant to eat at is the Green Pig Bistro. If you don’t eat meat you can always munch on plenty of nuts, as the best tasting peanuts in the country are grown in Virginia.
NORTH CAROLINA (NC)
Capitale: Raleigh
Soprannome: Stato del tallone di catrame/ Tar Heel State

Fiore: Cornus Florida/ Flowering Dogwood ( Cornus Florida )
I miei amici hanno nominato il primo volo di successo dei fratelli Wright legato a questo stato e Outer Bank, un posto di vacanze molto frequentato. Tra i personaggi famosi nati qui c’è Ric Flair, il wrestler. Tra i luoghi imperdibili troviamo la residenza Biltmore, un luogo da sogno, visitabile (ovviamente mi è venuta voglia di andarci appena l’ho vista!).
My friends mentioned the Wright Brothers and their first successful flight in history from the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Wrestling legend Ric Flair was born in this state. A must see attraction is the Biltmore Estate, America’s largest home. After seeing a picture of it, I added it to my bucket list.
South Carolina (SC)
Capitale: Columbia
Soprannome:Stato del palmetto/ the Palmetto State
Uccello: scricciolo della Grande Carolina/ Carolina wren
Fiore: Jessamine giallo/Yellow Jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens)
Nella mia ricerca mi sono scordata di chiedere di questo Stato. E pensare che mi piacerebbe tantissimo visitare una cittadina del South Carolina, Charleston: la città più vecchia, dai colori pastello, ricordata per essere stata la città da cui sono partiti i primi fuochi della Guerra Civile.
During my research, this state totally slipped my mind. And to think I would love to visit Charleston, America’s oldest city, and the beautiful rows of historic houses painted in pastel colors. Charleston was also where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in.
Questo Stato è famoso anche per le spiagge tropicali. Una delle località balneari più famose è Myrtle Beach.
This state is also well known for its nice beaches, Myrtle Beach is one of the most popular ones.
GEORGIA (GA)
Capitale: Atlanta
Soprannome: lo stato della pèsca/Peach State
Uccello: mimmo rosso/ Brown Thrasher
Fiore: rosa Cherokee/ Cherokee Rose
Oltre a essere produttrice di pesche, come appunto si capisce dal suo soprannome, lo Stato della Georgia produce anche in grande quantità pecan, arachidi e cipolle vidalia. Atlanta è conosciuta come la città natale del Movimento dei Diritti Civili: su Auburn Ave si trova la casa di Martin Luther King Jr.
On top of being a major producer of peaches, as its nickname clearly states, Georgia is also one of the nation’s top producers of pecans, peanuts and vidalia onions. Atlanta is known as the birthplace of the Civil Right Movement in America: Martin Luther King Jr. house, a National Historic Site is situated in Auburn Ave.
Altre cose per cui è ricordato lo stato della Georgia sono la Coca-cola, Chick-fil-A, grits, CNN e la città di Savannah. Qui si trova inoltre il primo college interamente femminile the Georgia Female College o anche Wesleyan College.

Florida (FL)

Se penso alla Florida mi vengono in mente palme e spiagge bianche immense, come quella di Daytona Beach , o come Key West, Delray Beach, Sarasota o Miami, che mi sono state nominate. Molti di voi ci hanno passato le vacanze, alcuni ci hano vissuto. Ho sentito dire spesso di alcune famiglie del New Jersey che hanno chiuso casa d’inverno per poterlo trascorrere in Florida. Deve assomigliare al paradiso in un certo senso, con quelle arance gustose, le palme, i tramonti mozzafiato e il clima caldo tutto l’anno. Fosse solo perché Disney World ci ha piantato radici. Oppure perché si è un po’ più vicino alle stelle con il Kennedy Space Center. Tutto meraviglioso. A parte gli uragani che spesso fanno visita a questa terra. C’è sempre il rovescio della medaglia.
Whenever I think about Florida I can’t help but dream about the miles and miles of white sand beaches like Daytona Beach, Key West, Delray Beach, Sarasota or Miami Beach. Some of you spent the holidays there, some lived there. I often hear about many families in New Jersey leaving their homes for the winter to move to the warmer temperatures of Florida. It must be close to paradise living there, in a way. Lucky those who can enjoy those tasty oranges, palm trees, stunning sunsets and warm weather year round, let alone Disney World which is based in this state and the fact that Florida is closer to the stars thanks to the Kennedy Space Center. Everything sounds amazing, except hurricanes which happen more often than anyone would like to admit. There’s always a trade off in everything.
Alabama (AL)

È lo stato con più risorse naturali di ferro e acciaio. Ad Huntsville si trova US Space and Rocket Center. Molti bambini ci fanno addirittura il camposcuola.
Alabama is a state with major natural resources of iron and steel. The US Space and Rocket Center are located in Huntsville, in Alabama. Many kids actually attend field trips there.
Mississippi (MS)

È lo Stato dov’è nato il blues. In questo Stato gli indiani del Mississippi giocavano a stickball che è considerato il più vecchio gioco disputato negli Stati Uniti. A Tupelo si trova la casa dove è nato Elvis Presley che ora è un museo.
Mississippi is the state of Blues. Here, Native Americans used to play stickball, considered one of the oldest team sports in America. Elvis Presley birthplace, now a museum, is located in Tupelo.
Louisiana
Capitale: Baton Rouge
Soprannome: Stato del Pellicano/Pelican State
Uccello: pellicano marrone dell’Est/ Brown Pelican
Fiore: Magnolia
La Louisiana era un territorio francese acquisito dagli Stati Uniti nel 1803 e annesso all’unione nel 1812. Se penso alla Louisiana mi viene subito in mente New Orleans, capitale della musica jazz e famosa per la sua cucina particolare e il Mardi’ Gras , il carnevale festeggiato alla loro particolare maniera, con collane di perline colorate, cocktails e tanta musica.
Ho avuto moltissime informazioni su questo stato perché ben due delle mie amiche sono sposate con due americani della Louisiana. Curioso, no?!? Vi faccio un elenco veloce di cosa mi hanno detto Caterina e Daniela:

Louisiana was acquired by the United States from France in 1803 and became a US State in 1812. When I think about Louisiana, New Orleans is the first word that comes to mind. One of the most famous Jazz cities in the world, New Orleans is also famous for its eclectic food and Mardi Gras, their world’s famous Carnival, celebrated with cute colorful beads, special cocktails and plenty of music. I gathered tons of info on this state because two friends of mine married two Americans from New Orleans. How cool?
