Oggi vi porto a conoscere un’amica “virtuale”, una donna forte, creativa, una splendida mamma di due bellissimi bimbi. Ora vive ad Aberdeen, in Scozia, ma in realtà è una vera e propria globetrotter, tanto che mi chiedo quanto a lungo resterà in terra scozzese. È anche venuta per un po’ dalle mie parti, ma il destino ha voluto che non c’incontrassimo. Ancora no, almeno, ma chissà che prima o poi non accada, sÌ perché Samanta Fornino è proprio una di quelle persone che mi piacerebbe abbracciare. Intanto ho pensato che, con questa breve intervista, fosse interessante farla conoscere anche a voi, perché anche lei, come tutti gli italiani espatriati (e non) ha una storia da raccontare.

Chi È Samanta Fornino? Presentati, dici qualcosa di te

Sono una persona molto solare ed estremamente testarda e determinata. Diciamo che dal mio punto di vista sono determinata… dal punto di vista di mio marito sono testarda….. Aggiungerei che vedo sempre il lato positivo nelle cose.

Ora vivi in Scozia con la tua famiglia. In realtà però sei una vera e propria globe trotter. In quali Paesi sei stata? Dove ti sei sentita “a casa”?
Da quando avevo 18 anni ed ho lasciato la mia città di origine, La Spezia, per studiare e poi lavorare, ho sempre viaggiato molto tra Italia ed Europa. La mia vita poi è cambiata radicalmente quando ho incontrato mio  marito. Lui viveva in Arabia Saudita per lavoro. Ho lasciato tutto… amici , casa e lavoro ( Milano) per seguirlo. Ci siamo spostati in Trinidad per circa un anno ed è stata l’esperienza più forte e difficile della mia vita. Dopo abbiamo vissuto per un breve periodo in Italia, poi Boston ed infine Inghilterra. La città che mi è rimasta nel cuore è sicuramente Boston, lì ho conosciuto tante persone speciali, è nato Lorenzo, e nonostante è una citta Usa è molto europea. Mi sentivo a casa.

Quali sono le tradizioni non italiane che hai imparato dai tuoi spostamenti e che desideri tramandare ai tuoi figli?

Più che tradizioni ad adattarmi a stili di vita e culture totalmente diverse dalla mia. Adattarmi e farle mie per riuscire ad integrarmi totalmente nel nuovo contesto in cui vivo. Per me questa è una cosa molto importante e sono felice di dare ai miei figli questa possibilità.

Qual è la prima cosa cui pensi quando pensi alla tua casa in Italia?  Cosa ti porteresti, se potessi, fino a dove vivi ora?

La cosa che mi manca di più è il caffè al Ginseng. Ogni volta che torno in Italia o che qualcuno viene a trovarmi mi faccio portare le scorte. A parte gli scherzi nulla di materiale. Quello che più mi manca è sicuramente la mia famiglia. Vivendo all’estero spesso ti perdi alcuni momenti importanti. Venerdì scorso, ad esempio, è nata la mia prima nipotina ed io ancora non ho avuto la possibilità di vederla dal vivo

Sei riuscita a trasformare la tua passione in lavoro e ora è anche un libro. Ti va di parlarcene?

“Uncinetto”, se così si può dire, da quando sono molto piccola ma poi per tanti anni avevo accantonato questa mia passione. Cinque anni fa, quando per amore ho lasciato tutto, ed ho iniziato a viaggiare seguendo mio marito nel suo lavoro, ho avuto la possibilità di dedicarmi al 100% alle mie passioni. Così ho ripreso in mano l’uncinetto e non l’ho più lasciato.
Da tempo volevo dare un seguito ai miei progetti e così ho presentato la mia idea ad una casa editrice. È stato il mondo degli animali e della natura ad ispirare le mie creazioni. Accessori che si trasformano in veri e propri giochi con i quali divertirsi con il proprio bambino.

Progetti futuri?

Mi piacerebbe fare video tutorial su YouTube e iniziare un blog personale tutto dedicato all’incinetto.

I’d like to introduce you to a good “virtual” friend of mine today. She’s a strong, creative woman and a great mother of two gorgeous little ones. She currently lives in Aberdeen, Scotland, but she’s a true globetrotter which makes me wonder how long she’ll be able to stay in Scottish territory for. She even visited my area before but destiny didn’t do a good job at letting us meet yet. I hope we will soon though, because Samanta Fornino is one of those people I would love to hug one day. In the meantime I thought that, with this short interview, you could get you to know her better too, because, as most Italian expats, she has a story to tell. Who is Samanta Fornino? Introduce yourself and tell us something about you. I’m a really sunny person. I’m extremely determined and stubborn. Let’s just say that I think I’m very determined while to my husband I’m just stubborn. I should add that I always strive to see the positive in everything. You live in Scotland with your family now, but you’re a true globetrotter. How many countries have you been to, and where did you feel at home the most? I traveled a lot between Italy and Europe ever since I was 18, when I left my home town, La Spezia, for business and to study, but my life drastically changed when I met my current husband. He was working in Saudi Arabia when I suddenly decided to leave everything behind, friends, family and my job in Milan, to follow him. We lived to Trinidad for a year which has been the most intense and difficult period of my life. After that we moved back to Italy for a short period of time, then Boston and finally England. The city that has a place in my heart is Boston: I met a lot of special people there and that’s the city where Lorenzo was born, let alone, even if it’s in the US, it’s very European. It felt like home. What are the non Italian traditions you have learned while living abroad that you would love to pass onto your children? I wouldn’t call them traditions but more trying to adapt to lifestyles and cultures that are totally different than mine. To be able to learn how to integrate myself completely in the society I live in, is very important to me and I’m happy to give my children the exact same opportunity. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your home in Italy? What do you miss the most and would love to bring with you where you live now? The thing I miss the most is my ginseng coffee. Whenever I go back or when someone comes to visit I make sure I load up on that. All jokes aside, it’s nothing materialistic. What I miss the most is, without a doubt, my family. It’s quite common to miss out on important family events, when you live abroad. For instance, last Friday my baby niece was born and I still haven’t had the chance to see her in person. You succeeded in turning your passion into your job and now you wrote a book. Care to share any details with us? I’ve been crocheting, if I can say that, ever since I was a little girl, but I ended up abandoning this passion of mine as I grew up. Five years ago, however, when I decided to follow my husband everywhere he traveled to, for work, I had more time on my hands to give my passions another chance. That’s when I started crocheting again and never looked back. I’ve been wanting to take my skills to the next level for a while, so one day I just presented my work to a publishing company and it went well. Allowing nature and animals to inspire my creations, my idea was to turn simple accessories into games to play and have fun with my children. Any plans for the future? I would love to make video tutorials on YouTube and start my own blog, entirely dedicated to crochet.
