Mancano ormai pochissimi giorni a Natale e fra poco dunque terminerà questa lunga attesa. Tuttavia forse non si nasconde proprio in questo la vera magia del Natale? Sì perché a questa festività, così importante per noi cristiani e amanti delle tradizioni, dobbiamo arrivarci preparati. Proprio un paio di giorni fa discutevo insieme alle mie collaboratrici di come la televisione americana avesse iniziato già da diverso tempo a trasmettere film natalizi. Sabrina sosteneva che anche in Germania era la stessa cosa, mentre Daniela, un po’ delusa, ci diceva di come la tv italiana non avesse ancora cominciato. Così mi è venuta un’idea: ho chiesto alle ragazze di scegliere insieme un totale di dieci film da suggerirvi per aiutarvi a entrare nello spirito natalizio. Ognuna di noi ha optato per alcuni lungometraggi e descritto i motivi della scelta. Ecco allora il nostro decalogo.

There are only a few days left until Christmas and finally the long awaited time will come. Perhaps the magic of this festivity lies in waiting for it to arrive. One thing is sure, that for all us who are Christian and love traditions, it is important to be fully prepared for Christmas. Just a couple of days ago I was discussing with my collaborators about the fact that the American TV has already started broadcasting Christmas movies. Sabrina said that in Germany it is pretty the same, while Daniela was a little disappointed since the Italian TV is not broadcasting any Christmas movies yet. So an idea came to my mind: I asked the girls to choose 10 movies that could better suit the Christmas mood. Each one of us chose some movies and explained the reason behind the choice. Here is our top 10.

Da quando vivo in America i film animati di Natale della Rankin Bass sono entrati nella mia tradizione. Ricordo ancora quando i primi anni li guardavo senza capirne una parola, ma lasciandomi rapire dalle immagini candide e dalle canzoni melodiose. Poi ho capito che oltre alle favoletta si nascondeva anche un messaggio, una morale e questo me li ha fatti amare ancora di più. È sicuramente il caso di Rudolph the rednosereindeer , il mio preferito, che racconta di come in quella notte nebbiosa della vigilia di Natale, Babbo Natale chiese a Rudolph, giovane renna presa in giro da tutti per un suo difetto fisico, il suo naso rosso e luminoso, di guidare la sua slitta. Se potete guardatevi il film e, anche se non capirete proprio tutto, ne vale davvero la pena. Qui, invece, ho deciso di condividere con voi la canzone che ormai è un classico anch’essa.

Since I’ve been living in the United States Rankin Bass’ Christmas animation movies became part of my set of traditions. I remember that during my first years in the U.S. I used to watch them without understanding a single word, but just looking at the pretty images and listening to the joyful songs, instead. Then I understood that behind there was more than a simple story; there is an important message and I started to love it even more since then. I am speaking of Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer, my favorite one. It is about how, on a foggy Christmas Eve night, Santa Claus asked Rudolph to lead his sleigh. Rudolph is a young reindeer, fooled by everyone for his red and luminescent nose. If you have the chance, watch the movie and even if you don’t understand exactly everything, it will be worth it. Here I’d like to share with you the song, a classic itself.

A Christams Story è un classico dei film americani di Natale. Ogni volta che passa alla TV io e mio marito non ce lo facciamo scappare. Pur essendo io contro  le armi da fuoco, sicuramente da quando sono negli Stati Uniti riconosco questo film come un classico del cinema americano di genere.

Durante gli anni Quaranta in una cittadina dell’Indiana, Ralphie chiede un fucile automatico Red Ryder come regalo di Natale, dono che riceverà, nonostante tutto e tutti cerchino di dissuaderlo, ma non senza conseguenze. Ogni scena ha qualcosa d’interessante e divertente e anche un pizzico di angoscia come questa che ho scelto per voi. Qui il bambino è al centro commerciale in fila per chiedere a Babbo Natale e agli elfi crudeli e sgarbati il suo regalo di Natale

A Christmas Story is a classic Christmas movie. Every time I see it on the TV my husband and I always end up watching it. Even if I am against fire-arms, I have to admit that this is really a nice classic, though.

During the 40’s in town in Indiana, Ralph asked for a Red Ryder automatic rifle as Christmas gift. Eventually he will receive the rifle, despite everybody was trying to dissuade him. In every scene there is something funny and interesting, but also a little bit of anguish, like in the scene I chose for you. Here the kid is lining up to ask for his Christmas gift to Santa and his mean elves.

Una commedia natalizia recente che mi ha conquistato fin da subito è Elf – Un elfo di nome Buddy  (in lingua originale semplicemente Elf). La comicità è esilarante, vi strapperà sorrisi e grasse risate dall’inizio alla fine. Buddy, elfo di Babbo Natale un po’ cresciuto, scopre di non essere un vero e proprio elfo e decide di andare a cercare il suo vero padre a New York.
Anche qui ho davvero avuto difficoltà a scegliere una sola scena. Mi ha aiutato il fatto che in lingua italiana non ce ne sono molte disponibili su YouTube.
In questa scena Buddy mostra la sua abilità “elfica” nella battaglia a palle di neve tra ragazzini, e grazie a questa capacità si conquista un amico

A recent Christmas movie that caught my attention is Elf. The gags are overwhelming and you will laugh from the start until the end. Buddy, a too much grown-up Santa’s elf, finds out that he is not a real elf, so he decides to go to New York to look for his real father.

I had some difficulty in having to pick just one scene. It helped the fact that I wanted to choose scenes in Italian, but on YouTube I could hardly find them.

In this scene Buddy shows his “elf” ability in a snowball fight with some kids and thanks to this “skill” he makes friends.

Mettetevi comodi per i prossimi 4 minuti, e godetevi la scena di quello che è un classico, un film americano natalizio che io personalmente guardavo ogni anno in questo periodo, quando ero in Italia. Sto parlando di Miracle on 34th Street, in Italia uscito come Miracolo nella 34esima strada, remake del film di G. Seaton del 1947 (Il miracolo della 34esima strada). Un Babbo Natale vero, una bambina diffidente, una mamma in carriera.. la scena di seguito è quella che riguarda il primo incontro tra Susan e Santa Claus: la tenerezza della bambina mista alla sua serietà e alla logica disarmante, il sorriso e lo sguardo unico che tutti noi avremmo voluto incontrare sul volto del “nostro” Babbo Natale, sono per me indimenticabili, e mi riportano ai giorni belli in cui fermamente credevo in questo meraviglioso signore di rosso vestito. O ci credo anche ora? Me lo chiedo, e qualche volta mi rispondo di sì.

Just sit comfortably for the next 4 minutes and enjoy this scene from a classic, American Christmas movie that I used to watch every year when I was in Italy. I am talking about Miracle on 34^th Street, remake of G. Seaton’s 1947 movie. There is a real Santa Claus, a skeptical kid and a business Mum…the scene here is the meeting between Susan and Santa. It is simply unforgettable to me that mix of tenderness and seriousness on the girl’s face and the warm and hearty smile that Santa Claus has. The Santa Claus that we imagine is just like this and takes me back to my most beautiful days, when I used to believe in the amazing man with the red robe. Or maybe do I still believe in him? I ask myself sometimes and I also answer “yes” sometimes.

E come non citare Joyeux Noël – Una verità dimenticata dalla storia (titolo originale Joyeux Noël), il film del 2005 prodotto da Francia, Germania e Regno Unito? Candidato all’Oscar e al Golden Globe nel 2006 come miglior film straniero, celebra la famosa “Tregua di Natale”. La scena che vedrete è così natalizia e così tanto “umana” da strappare un sorriso un po’ amaro ma commosso.
Prima Guerra Mondiale, Dicembre 1914. I soldati nelle loro trincee hanno voglia di casa. A un tratto un soldato tedesco intona Stille Nacht. E improvvisamente, fra gli eserciti nemici, scoppia il Natale. Soldati tedeschi, scozzesi e francesi, contravvenendo agli ordini, danno vita alla famosa tregua, per una notte soltanto, scambiandosi gli auguri coi loro “Frohe Weihnachten”, “Joyeux Noel” e “Merry Christmas”.
La scena è meravigliosa, e dalla Baviera dove mi troverò a trascorrere queste feste non potevo non scegliere questa.. lo so che è in tedesco coi sottotitoli in inglese, ma credetemi non vi servirà capire le parole, anzi. Buona visione!

I cannot avoid to mention Joyeux Noël, a 2005 movie made in France, Germany and UK. It was nominated for the Oscar and the Golden Globe in 2006 for Best Foreign Language Movie, with its famous “Christmas truce”. The following scene is so christmas-y and so “human” that makes you smile and get emotional at the same time.

World War I, December 1944. The soldiers in the trenches feel homesick. At some point a German soldier starts singing Silent Night in German. And suddenly among the enemy troops it’s Christmas. German, Scottish and French soldiers decide to make a cease-fire for one night, going against the orders and they did wish “Merry Christmas”, “Frohe Weihnachten” and “Joyeux Noël”.

This scene is amazing and I could not help it but choosing this one set in Bavaria, where I will spend next Christmas…Enjoy!

Infine, un gesto d’amore. Da una come me era anche facile aspettarselo, lo so. Ma se penso al Natale nello spettacolo e all’Italia, come faccio a non rendere onore a lui? Eduardo è Eduardo, si sa. E Natale in casa Cupiello è un gioiello di cui dobbiamo vantarci ogni volta che possiamo. Commedia tragicomica scritta e interpretata da uno splendido Eduardo De Filippo, vede la luce delle scene teatrali nel 1931, e successivamente due trasposizioni cinematografiche, con Eduardo nel ruolo di Lucariello, il padre innamorato del presepe. La scena che vedrete l’ho scelta col cuore, è divertente, centra in pieno lo spirito natalizio di questo articolo, ma soprattutto è un grande capolavoro d’arte drammatica. Guardateli, ascoltateli, osservate le espressioni, le emozioni, la fisicità espressa: non è forse questo, che intendiamo, quando parliamo di attori? Lasciatevelo dire, se c’è una cosa che non si può insegnare né imparare, è recitare. Si possono apprendere gli strumenti, acquisire le tecniche, e queste sono a mio avviso cose importantissime e fondamentali per un attore, ma nessuno vi insegnerà a recitare. Questa è la prima cosa che ho imparato, quando ho iniziato a studiare per fare questo mestiere e quella che tengo sempre a mente quando sono in scena.
Molti fanno gli attori, pochi lo sono. Loro lo sono. E grazie a Dio si vede la differenza.
Vi lascio alla scena che ho scelto, la famosissima lettera di Natale di Tommasino. Uno spettacolo.

And then I chose this last one by following my heart. You could easily expect a movie like that from my side. How could I not mention and honor him? Because whenever I think of Christmas Eduardo always comes to my mind. Eduardo De Filippo in Natale in casa Cupiello (Christmas at Cupiello’s), an Italian theater gem. It is a tragicomic 1931 piece written and played by an amazing actor, named Eduardo De Filippo and first conceived for the theatre. I chose this scene because it’s so funny and on the point with Christmas and at the same time it’s a dramatic art masterpiece. Look and listen carefully, observe those expressions, the emotions: isn’t it the true meaning of acting? Let me tell you that if there is something that you cannot teach, nor learn is acting. You can learn how to use some tools and techniques, so important to me, but still nobody can teach you how to act. This was the first thing that I’ve learned as soon as I started studying acting and this is what I always try to keep in mind.

Many play the actors, only a few are actors. They are. And thanks God you can see the difference.

The Polar Express è uno dei più grandi classici Natalizi e io lo adoro. Il protagonista, un bambino scettico che non crede a Babbo Natale, viene portato da un treno a vapore al Polo Nord la notte della Vigilia. Quando incontra Babbo Natale gli chiede, come regalo, di poter sentire il suono delle campanelle della sua slitta. Se lo sentirà significherà che l’avventura magica sul Polar Express gli ha fatto finalmente cambiare idea sul Natale. Guardate un po’ cosa succede nella mia scena preferita del film? Ho scelto questa clip perché tutti, sia grandi che piccini dovremmo credere a Babbo Natale in quanto figura che rappresenta l’amore, l’altruismo e la bontà d’animo.

 Polar Express is one of the greatest classic Christmas movies and I love it. The main character is a skeptical kid who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus and on Christmas Eve reaches the North Pole on a steam locomotive. Once there he meets Santa and he asks him for a gift: the chance to hear Santa’s sleigh bells. If he will really hear them, then it means that the magical adventure he lived on the Polar Express really made him change his mind about Christmas. Let’s have a look at what happen in my favorite scene! I chose this one because everybody should believe in Santa Claus, being the personification of love, altruism and of a good soul.

Christmas Vacation (Un Natale Esplosivo)  è un film cult del cinema Americano dal 1989. Adoro tutti i film che riguardano le pazze avventure della famiglia Griswold, ma questo è il mio preferito in assoluto. La scena che vi propongo non ha bisogno di premesse. Guardatela e morirete dal ridere. Io lo faccio ogni volta.

Christmas Vacation is a 1989 American cult movie. I love all those movies about the adventures of the Griswold family and this is my absolute favorite one. No need to explain the following scene. Just watch it and I promise you, you will laugh so much. I do it every time.

Home Alone (Mamma, ho perso l’aereo) (1990)

In italiano è conosciuto come “Mamma, ho perso l’aereo” e davvero c’è qualcuno che ancora non l’ha visto?! Ho scelto questo film cult perché è uno di quei film che continuo a guardare e riguardare ogni volta che lo trovo in Tv e per me è un “comfort movie”. Vedo però che non sono l’unica ad avere questa bizzarra ossessione. Poi come non citarlo proprio nell’anno della ricorrenza dei suoi 25 anni! Adoro soprattutto la prima parte con la grande famiglia in procinto di partire per le vacanze natalizie e ovviamente quando arrivano i due ladri e scattano le geniali trappole. Ma lo sapevate che Robert de Niro ha rifiutato il ruolo del ladro, andato poi a Joe Pesci? E lo sapete che Fuller, il cugino con il quale Kevin non vuole condividere il letto “perché dopo aver bevuto Pepsi fa la pipì a letto” è in realtà il fratello dell’attore Macaulay Culkin? E lo sapete che il ragno sulla faccia di Daniel Stern è vero e che…Ecco fermatemi oppure continuo a parlarne fino a Natale!

Di scene belle ce ne sono tantissime ma questa è sempre divertente, anche dopo averla vista letteralmente milioni di volte!

 Home Alone (1990)

Is there really anybody out there who has never watched this movie?! I chose this cult piece because it’s one of those movies that I keep watching and watching every single time I find it on the TV and because it relaxes me so much, let’s say that it’s one of my comfort movies. I know that I am not the only one who has this weird addiction. And then, this year we celebrate 25 years from its release! I love especially the first part with the whole, big family ready to leave for the holidays and of course I am obsessed with the part when the two robbers enter the house and all the brilliant traps spring. But did you know that Robert De Niro rejected the part that later went to Joe Pesci? And did you know that Fuller, Kevin’s cousin who wets the bed after drinking Pepsi, is the real Macaulay Culkin’s brother? And did you know that the spider on Daniel Stern’s face is real and…Ok, please stop me, otherwise I might go on until Christmas!

There are so many funny scenes in this movie but I picked this one, always so extremely funny, even if you watch it for a million times.

L’amore non va in vacanza (The Holiday) (2006)

Questo è un film che in realtà mi piace guardare tutto l’anno, ma guardarlo nel periodo natalizio rende questa commedia con Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet e Jack Black ancora più intensa. Mi rilassano tanto le scene della casetta sperduta nella neve in Inghilterra e quelle della mega casa, super comoda e tecnologica nel caldo della California, e l’idea di scambiarsi le case per Natale è geniale. Mi piace anche perché a tutti è capitato di provare a volte quella strana malinconia “da vacanze natalizie” e quindi un po’ ci si riconosce nelle due protagoniste. Ovviamente però la magia natalizia ha la meglio e non manca il lieto fine. Godetevi il trailer. Film natalizio per adulti da guardare rigorosamente sul divano con coperta e con a scelta una tazza di cioccolata calda o un bicchiere di vino rosso.

The Holiday (2006)

Honestly I enjoy to watch this movie all year-round, but in the Christmas time this rom-com with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet and Jack Black comes right on the point. I find it so relaxing to watch both the isolated, snowy little house in the English countryside and the huge, super comfy and sunny California house. Plus, I find it simply brilliant the house exchange for the Christmas holidays. I like this movie also because it happened to everybody to feel a little bit “sad” during Christmas time, so one could easily connect with the two main characters’ feelings. But of course there is a happy ending…so, enjoy the trailer.

This is the perfect movie to watch exclusively on the couch, with a cozy blanket and a hot chocolate mug or a glass of red wine. The choice is yours.

È davvero una lista un po’ per tutti i gusti che spero vi aiuterà a scegliere cosa guardare in questo periodo. Visto però che i film di Natale sono davvero tanti e bellissimi, ora tocca a voi dare qualche suggerimento a noi. Come? Se vi va, scrivete nei commenti il vostro film di Natale preferito. Sarà un po’ come scambiarci  pacchetti sotto l’albero.
