Si è appena concluso l’annuale Fall Festival in Allentown, il paese in cui vivo. Ogni anno, insieme alla mia famiglia, cerco di andare a fare un giro alla festa. Il festival autunnale non è solo motivo di festeggiare la stagione del raccolto, ma una vera e propria celebrazione degli abitanti e dei commercianti di questo piccolo paesino del New Jersey. Da quando mio figlio Roman è nato, non siamo mai mancati. Quest’anno inoltre ha potuto gironzolare ed esplorare l’evento con i suoi pedini, tutta la curiosità e il suo immancabile stupore. Allora, riguardando le foto ho pensato che stavolta sarebbe stato simpatico lasciare a lui l’onore di raccontarci questo weekend di festa.

The annual Fall Festival is now over and took place in Allentown, the town where I live in. Every year I try to go there, together with my family. The fall festival is not only a way to celebrate the harvest time, but also a true celebration of the inhabitants and the trade of this small town in New Jersey. Since my son Roman was born, we never missed it. Moreover this year, he is able to walk, therefore he can happily stroll around on his own, small feet, filled with curiosity and wonder. So this time I thought that it would have been nice to let him tell you about last weekend at the festival.

SABATO/SATURDAY

Quando mamama e daddy dicono che andiamo bye bye io sono sempre pronto. Viaggiare in macchina, soprattutto quando sono stanco, mi calma: mi piace guardare il mondo che corre forte fuori dal finestrino. Quando poi con noi viene anche mio fratello Rocco, sono ancora più felice. Partiamo tutti insieme, c’è anche Rocco seduto vicino a me, ma neanche cinque minuti e già siamo fermi. E no, dai, non si fa così! Mamma vuole prendere il passeggino, ma daddy dice che posso camminare. Vince daddy… Evviva! Arriviamo sulla Main Street di Allentown, dove c’è gente ovunque, musica e tanta confusione. La prima cosa che vedo sono i fiori che faccio vedere subito alla mia mamma. A lei piacciono tanto i fiori!

When Mommy and Daddy say “bye bye”, I understand that it’s time to leave the house and I am always ready. I love travelling by car, because it calms me, especially when I am tired, and I also like to watch the world running fast out of my window car. When also my brother Rocco comes with us, I am even happier. So we left all together, with Rocco seating next to me, but after not even 5 minutes we were already there. No, it’s not fair! Mummy always wants to bring the stroller with us, but Daddy says that I can walk now. Daddy wins…Hooray! We reached Allentown Main Street, where there was people everywhere, music and chaos. The first thing I saw were the flowers, that I immediately showed to Mom. She likes flowers a lot!

Vorrei tanto correre e toccare ogni cosa che vedo, ma mamma comincia a fermarsi a ogni stand e non mi molla la mano. Cerco di scappare, ma non ci riesco!

I wanted to run and touch everything, but Mom kept stopping at every stand and never let go of my hand. I tried to run away but I couln’t!

A un certo punto ho incontrato un uomo altissimo che lanciava in aria delle cose colorate che non ho mai visto prima e che avrei tanto voluto prendere, ma lui, ignorandomi, non le ha lasciate cadere e le ha riprese come se nulla fosse. Allora niente, come non detto, abbiamo continuato a camminare.

At some point I met a very tall guy who was throwing up in the air some colored things, never seen before, and I wanted to catch them but he ignored me and he caught them back, without letting them fall. So, ok, we kept walking.

Cominciavo ad essere stanco quando il mio daddy mi ha dato uno di quei palloncini che vibrano in aria dappertutto e danno sempre tanto quell’aria di festa.

I started to feel tired when my Daddy gave me one of those vibrating balloons, going everywhere and making you so cheerful.

Mamma poi, come al solito, voleva una foto insieme, ma a me non è che andava tanto. L’ho lasciata vincere.

Then, as usual, Mom wanted to take a picture together, but honestly I wasn’t feeling too much like it.. In the end I let her win.

Poi cominciavo davvero a essere stanco… Ma quanto dobbiamo camminare?!?!

But then I was feeling veery tired…For how long we still have to walk?!?!

Arrivati a questo stand ci siamo fermati. Daddy e Rocco sono andati a prendere del materiale, mentre io e mamma siamo andati in un posto dove c’erano altri bambini e delle cose tutte rotte color oro, che mamma chiamava paglia e daddy straw, che era un vero piacere avere tra le mani. Quando daddy mi ha detto che potevo aiutare, mi sono svegliato di colpo e ho iniziato a divertirmi.

We stopped by this stand and while Daddy and Rocco were collecting some materials, Mom and I were together with other children and some golden color things. Mum call them paglia, while Dad call them straw. Anyway, it was so nice to play with it. As soon as Daddy told me that I could help, I suddenly woke up and started to have fun.

Prima di continuare, Rocco e io abbiamo preso lo zucchero filato…Me lo sono proprio gustato!

Before walking on, Rocco and I ate cotton candy…I really enjoyed it!

Mamma poi ha continuato a insistere che ero stanco, così lei ha portato lo spaventapasseri e il mio palloncino al sicuro in macchina, io, daddy e Rocco siamo andati al parco dove c’era la rappresentazione della Rivoluzione Americana.

Mom insisted on the fact that I was tired, so she brought the scarecrow and the balloon back to the car. Daddy, Rocco and I headed towards the park where there was the representation of the American Revolution.

Questo era uno dei campi di battaglia, non so se fosse Nord o Sud, non ci ho capito molto. Siamo passati poi dall’altra parte. Anche mamma ci ha raggiunto, con il passeggino e le bevande. Che sete mi era venuta! Lei e daddy hanno parlato per tanto tempo con della gente vestita strana che abitava in tende come tanti anni fa, e c’erano oggetti, abiti e mobili che usavano a quei tempi. Loro dormono davvero sotto le stelle, soprattutto se non possono comprare una tenda. Questi signori hanno detto ai miei genitori che fanno parte di un gruppo e che girano diversi Stati Americani rappresentando la guerra d’Indipendenza Americana. Io non ascoltavo molto il discorso, ma loro invece si.

This was one of the battlefields, I don’t know if it was the North or the South, I did not understand that much. Then we moved to the other side. Then also Mom reached us, together with stroller and beverages. I was so thirsty! She and Daddy talked a lot with people wearing weird dresses and living in tents, like people used to do many years ago. There were also so many objects, clothes and furniture that were typical of those ancient times. These people were telling that they really sleep under the stars, especially if they cannot buy a tent. They also told my parents that they are part of a group and they go from state to state representing the American Independence War. I wasn’t listening that much, but they did.

Mi sono divertito tanto e non mi sono mai addormentato. Sapete però la cosa che ho amato di più? Rotolarmi nell’erba insieme a mio fratello Rocco.

I had a lot of fun and I never fell asleep.Do you know what I loved the most? Rolling in the grass with my brother Rocco.

DOMENICA/SUNDAY

Domenica siamo tornati alla festa, ma solo io e la mia mamma. Ci siamo incontrati con delle cugine di nonno Augusto, Lisa, Sandy e Ida. All’inizio ero un po’ timido, ma poi erano molto simpatiche e mi è piaciuto stare con loro.

On Sunday we came back to the festival, but only Mom and I. We met Grandpa Augusto’s cousins: Lisa, Sandy and Ida. At the beginning I was a little shy, but then they were very nice and I enjoyed their company.

Abbiamo fatto un giro per la bancarelle della Main Street, così la mia mamma è contenta, dice sempre che “le piace riempirsi gli occhi di bellezza perché la aiuta a superare le sgradevolezze della vita” (chissà che significa!).

We strolled around the stands along Main Street, so Mom was happy, because she always says that she likes to “fulfill the eyes with beauty”, in order to help her “overcome the unpleasant things in life”, (who knows what does it mean!).

Poi abbiamo incontrato lui e ci è venuta subito voglia di tornare nel parco a vedere la guerra.

Then we met him and we wanted to go back to the park, to see again the war representation.

Quando siamo arrivati, abbiamo visto che quelle tende non c’erano più, ma erano rimaste solo quelle dall’altra parte.

But once there, we saw that there were no more pavilions. Only the ones on the other side were still there.

Mi sa tanto che questo era il Nord, perché avevano davvero tanti oggetti, perfino i negozi! Ho sentito mamma dire che al Nord sono sempre più ricchi, di solito.

I guess that this was the North, since there were really so many objects and even shops! I heard Mom saying that  usually the North is always the richest one. 

Poi mentre tornavamo alla Main Street, siamo passati vicino agli animali delle fattorie. Che carini, me li sarei portati tutti a casa.

While coming back to Main Street, we passed by the animal farm. They were so cute, I wanted to bring them all to my house.

Siamo poi tornati alla festa. Davanti al vecchio mulino, dipingevano zucche. Erano così belle e colorate che non potevo non toccarle. Mamma mi ha strillato perché la vernice di una zucca era fresca e me la sono portata via sulle dita.

We went back to the festival. In front of the old mill people were painting pumpkins. They were so cute and colorful that I couldn’t help but touch them. Mom yelled at me because it was fresh paint and then my fingers had paint stuck on them.

La musica poi non poteva di certo mancare. La senti che ti abbraccia tutt’intorno e ti fa muovere le gambe.

Of course there was also music. You could feel it in the air and made you move your legs.

Poi camioncini che vendevano cibo e gente a fare la fila o seduta a mangiare.

And there were also small trucks selling food and people in line or sitting at the tables.

Ero stanco. Stavolta non sono scappato quando la mia mamma mi ha messo nel passeggino. Ho continuato a girare così nella Main Street tutta colorata e piena di gente, che è così solo alcune volte, come oggi e a Halloween ( ho sentito che lo diceva mamma, io non lo ricordo, ero piccolino, ma lo scoprirò presto), facendomi cullare dalle forme, dai colori, dalle voci.

I was tired. This time I did not run away when Mom put me in the stroller. We kept strolling around Main Street, full of colors and people. It is so lively only during these days and when it’s Halloween (I heard that Mom was saying this, but I don’t remember it since I was too small, but I will find out soon). We went around and I shapes, colors and voices lulled me.

E poi mi sono addormentato. Quando mi sono svegliato ero a casa. C’era Rocco che mi chiedeva di decorare la zucca insieme a lui e a daddy. La festa era finita. Restava il ricordo, tante foto e ora questo articolo.

And then I fell asleep. When I later woke up, I was at home. There was Rocco asking me to decorate a pumpkin and also Daddy was there. The festival was over. But a lot of memories and pictures and this post here will remain.

Ora insieme a foglie e zucche nelle case si vedono anche mostri e fantasmi. Io ho già imparato a dire la parola Halloween, non so ancora bene cosa mi aspetta, ma non vedo l’ora di scoprirlo.

So now in our house we have not only leaves and pumpkins, but also monsters and ghosts. I already learned how to pronounce Halloween, I don’t know very well what to expect, but I am looking forward to find it out soon.
