Bentrovati col nostro consueto appuntamento con le interviste agli italiani nel mondo. Luglio è forse il mese più bello e caldo dell’ anno e da quello che leggo sui notiziari, sui tweet e i commenti su Facebook, mi pare di capire che almeno in Italia la situazione non è cambiata. Una volta era così anche nella East Coast Americana… Dove sei finita Estate? Me lo chiedo spesso. Eppure, caldo o non caldo, la situazione non cambia. La voglia di vacanza in questo periodo dell’anno è tanta. Visto che io le mie ferie le ho già quasi finite, ho deciso di “partire” col mio blog e andare a trovare Simona Basciu che invece ha deciso di andare a vivere “in vacanza” tutto l’anno… A Tenerife! Siccome sono una persona generosa, ho deciso di portare anche voi in questa avventura nelle isole Canarie. Che dite, vi piace l’idea? Allora non perdiamo altro tempo e andiamo subito a conoscere Simona.
Ciao Simona. Sarò subito diretta perché molto curiosa… Come sei finita a Tenerife?
Ciao Alessandra. La storia è un po’ lunga. Ho sempre condotto una vita per così dire “normale”: fidanzata dall’età di 17 anni, commessa part time per mantenermi gli studi, (poi in seguito full time da Max and Co.) uscite con le amiche, qualche vacanza. Quando mia sorella nel 2010 è partita a fare l’animatrice turistica in Egitto, mi sono crollate tutte le certezze. Ero arrabbiata, delusa e allo stesso tempo affascinata da questa scelta. Quando sono andata a trovarla l’ho trovata raggiante e felice e ho capito che aveva preso la giusta decisione. Così questo suo cambiamento mi ha aperto gli occhi e ho iniziato a farmi diverse domande: Chi sono? Cosa voglio? Come voglio vivere?
Al mio ritorno ho messo in discussione tutto: ho chiuso la mia storia che durava da sei anni. E anche Genova, la mia bellissima città che amo da morire, sentivo che comunque mi stava chiudendo e non mi dava la possibilità di vivere come davvero volevo.
Così, per circa tre anni, ho iniziato a viaggiare con la mia amica Giulia in giro per l’Europa: Egitto, Portogallo, Spagna, Londra, Isole Baleari e… Isole Canarie. Ogni viaggio e’ stato speciale emozionante e bellissimo, ma se avessi dovuto decidere di vivere in uno di questi posti, sarebbe stato alle Canarie, perché c’è sempre il sole! Iniziai a capire che ciò che realmente mi faceva sentire bene era poco: tranquillità, sole tutto l’anno, rumore e profumo di mare, una birra al tramonto e la sabbia in mezzo alle dita dei piedi tutti i giorni. Un secondo viaggio alle Canarie nell’inverno del 2013 mi ha fatto tornare con la voglia di mollare tutto. Un’ altra vacanza in estate a Fuerteventura mi ha dato il coraggio giusto e al mio ritorno, sono andata a lavoro e all’ insaputa di tutti ho parlato con il mio capo e dato le dimissioni anticipate di un bel po’ di mesi dicendogli che avrei lavorato fino a fine anno e che poi me ne sarei andata a vivere a Tenerife (non ti dico la sua faccia ahahahahahahah). Via. Per sempre o per un periodo. Ancora non ce l’avevo bene in testa. Quello che importava per me era provare. Seguire il mio istinto per una volta nella vita, fare quello che dicevo fregandomene dell’ opinione di tutti e provare a vivere come volevo io, solo io! E dal 2 Gennaio 2014 sono su quest’isola.
Ricordo le tue bellissime foto dei tramonti al porto di Genova e sul mare che vedevo su Instagram. Cosa ti sei portata dietro e cosa invece hai trovato sull’isola?
La mia città dico la verità mi manca meno… la continuo ad amare ma io proprio lì non mi ci riesco a vedere più. Mentre invece, mi manca la mia gente!! Mi mancano mia sorella, le amiche vere, quelle di sempre, mi manca la possibilità di vedere tutti i giorni la mia famiglia. Vorrei fossero qui con me. Per fortuna c’è il cuore, dove vivono tutti come se fossero al mio fianco.
Invece sull’isola ho trovato l’amore. L’ho trovato subito, lo stesso giorno in cui sono arrivata. Luca, anche lui italiano, a Tenerife da 4 anni. Dopo 2 settimane già eravamo innamorati, da subito ci siamo riconosciuti… quando penso a noi e a come sono andate le cose dico sempre che incosciamente lui è il vero motivo per cui il destino mi ha voluto far tornare qui. Luca mi ha incoraggiato in tutto, mi ha aiutato con la lingua, mi ha spinto a “tentare” e ad avere fiducia in me stessa. E poi ora si è aggiunto alla famiglia il nostro adorato cagnone Sunny che per noi è come un figlio.
Com’è la situazione lavorativa a Tenerife? Sei riuscita a trovare la stessa occupazione che svolgevi in Italia?
I primi 3 mesi ho lavorato come barista in un bar inglese (l’unico idioma che conoscevo abbastanza bene e che potevo sfruttare qui) e nonostante fosse un lavoro totalmente diverso dal mio mi ha entusiasmata tantissimo e aiutato e prendere confidenza con il posto, con il turismo, con la gente e con il mondo del lavoro qui. Lavoravo poco, ma ero contenta così…in quei mesi mi sono goduta appieno la vita qui: sole, mare, lunghe passeggiate, giri alla scoperta di posti nuovi, tramonti, feste.
La situazione lavorativa qui è abbastanza buona, se cerchi lavoro costantemente e hai esperienza e conosci spagnolo e inglese trovi sia nell’ostelleria (bar, hotel, ristoranti) che nei negozi. C’è tanto turismo specialmente inglese e russo e c’è tanto via vai di gente straniera che viene per lavorare un po’ e poi cambia posto o torna a casa, quindi ciclicamente le imprese assumono e hanno sempre da offrirti lavoro. La cosa buona è che qui non esiste una stagione: fa sempre caldo e si lavora 12 mesi all’anno tranne a Maggio e a Novembre, che sono i periodi un po’ più “morti” con meno turismo, di conseguenza lavoro lo trovi sempre in qualsiasi settore. L’unica pecca è che qui è difficile lavorare effettivamente le ore dichiarate sul contratto… la maggior parte delle volte si lavora 8/9 ore al giorno con un solo giorno libero alla settimana. E un’altra pecca è che gli stipendi in media sono bassi. Va anche detto però che il costo della vita qui non è alto, considerando che le isole Canarie sono esentasse (abbiamo l’iva al 7%!!!). Quindi alla fine si compensano le cose.
Io sono venuta con l’idea di imparare lo spagnolo poco a poco e di tornare a fare il mio lavoro di commessa che tanto mi piace in un contesto diverso da quello della città italiana. Dopo 4 mesi che ero qui ho avuto la prima opportunità di lavorare da Zara.. finito lì in attesa che mi richiamassero mi hanno contattato per lavorare nel negozio di abbigliamento di “Mango” e da lì ho preso il via nel mondo del lavoro. Ho iniziato a parlare spagnolo, specializzato il mio inglese, ripreso a parlare il francese che non avevo più avuto occasione di praticare dalla fine degli studi e dopo qualche mese la titolare di Mango in vista dell’apertura di un franchising della boutique di gioielli “Pandora” mi ha proposto di andare a lavorare lì.
E così oggi dopo quasi un anno mi ritrovo responsabile della boutique, felicissima della mia vita, con un compagno stupendo e con il nostro adorato cagnone Sunny.
Ci racconti una giornata tipo sull’isola?
La vita qui è molto tranquilla, si vive sulla spiaggia tutto l’anno, si sta bene, vivi con poco e sei felice solo di avere l’opportunità di godere della natura, del sole sempre, di un clima che a livello fisico ti fa stare bene. E quando sei stanco del mare in quest’isola c’è il Teide che è il monte piu alto della Spagna, mezz’ora di macchina e ti sembra di essere in un’altra isola!! E se ti stanchi del caldo ti basta andare al nord dell’isola che le temperature si abbassano di circa 10 gradi! È strano come in un posto così “piccolo” si concentrino tanti paesaggi e tanti microclimi differenti… io questo posto lo amo proprio per questo, non mi sembra mai di essere nello stesso luogo!!! (però resto volentieri a vivere al sud dell’isola dove c’è sempre caldo!)
Le nostre giornate libere tipo sono fatte di mare, passeggiate con il cane, pranzetti nei posti tipici di qui, aperitivi, tramonti… una vita davvero semplicissima fatta di poche cose ma giuste, per stare bene e vivere come piace a noi.
Dove vedi il tuo futuro?
Non chiedermi come vedo il mio futuro perché so solo una cosa per certo: non torno indietro. So che voglio continuare a vivere cosí… ma chissà che un giorno si cambierà meta. Per ora mi godo la mia vita qui e vedremo come proseguono le cose e cosa ci dirà l’istinto. In spagnolo si dice NUNCA SE SABE (non si sa mai). La cosa più importante è che la pace e la stabilità interiore che tanto cercavo l’ho trovata, e soprattutto ho trovato l’amore, cosa che sottovalutavo negli ultimi anni e che invece ho scoperto fondamentale per vivere al 100%… e infine, ma non ultimo, credo di aver trovato anche il mio posto nel mondo (ma ancora non lo voglio dire a voce troppo alta!!)

Welcome back with our usual appointment with the interviews of the Italians of the world. July is perhaps the most beautiful and hot month of the year and from what I read on the news, the tweets and the comments on Facebook, looks like the situation at least in Italy didn’t change. Once used to be the same in the American East Coast… Where have you gone summer? I ask it often to myself. Yet, heat or not heat, the situation doesn’t change. The desire to vacation during this period of the year is huge. Because I almost finished my days off at work, I decided to “leave” with my blog and go visit Simona Basciu who instead decided to live on vacation all year long… in Tenerife! And because I am a generous person I decided to bring you also in this adventure in the Canary Islands. What do you say, do you like the idea? So, let’s not waste more time and let’s go to meet Simona.
Hi Simona, I will be direct right away, because I am very curious… How did you end up in Tenerife?
Hi Alessandra. It’s a bit of a long story. I have always led a life so “normal”, to say, engaged since I was 17 years old, part time clerk to pay for my studies (then later full time in the store Max and Co.), outings with friends, few vacations. When my sister in 2010 left to be a tourist entertainer in Egypt, all my certainties have collapsed. I was angry, upset, but at the same time fascinated about this choice. When I went to see her I found her radiant and happy and I understood she made the right choice. So, this change opened up my eyes and I started to ask many questions to myself: Who am I? What do I want? How do I want to live?
Upon my return I questioned everything: I closed my story that lasted for six years. Also Genoa, my very beautiful city which I really love, I felt that it was closing me anyway and it didn’t give me the chance to live how I really wanted.
Then for about three years I started to travel with my friend Giulia around Europe: Egypt, Portugal, Spain, London, Baleari Islands… and Canary Islands. Every trip was special, exciting, beautiful, but if I had to decide to live in one of these places, it would it be the Canary Islands, because there is always the sun! I started to realize that what made me feel good was little: tranquility, sun all year long, the noise and the smell of the sea, a beer on the sunset and sand between my toes every day. A second trip to the Canary Islands in 2013 made me come back with the desire to quit everything. Another vacation in Fuerteventura gave me the right bravery and at my return, I went to work and, unbeknownst to all, I talked to my boss telling him I wanted to work till the end of the year and then I would move to Tenerife (I cannot tell you his face ahahahah). Away. Forever for a period. I didn’t have in my mind yet. What was important to me was to try, do what I wanted to do not caring of the opinions of everyone and try to live how I wanted , only how I wanted. And since January 2nd 2014 I am on this island.
I remember the beautiful pictures of the sunset on the Genoa Harbor and on the sea on Instagram. What did you bring whit you and what did you live on the island?
I miss my city less, I tell you the truth… I still love it but I don’t see myself there anymore. Instead, I miss my people! I miss my sister, my real friends, the ever girlfriends, I miss the possibility to see my family every day. I wish they were here with me. Thank God there is the heart, where they all live like they are by my side.
Instead on the island I found love. I found it right away, the same day I arrived. Luca, Italian he too, in Tenerife for four years. After two weeks we were already in love, we immediately recognized… When I think about us, how the things went, I always say subconsciously that he is the real reason that destiny made me come back here. Luca encourages me in everything, he helped me with the language, he inspired me to try and believe in myself. And the now our beloved big dog Sunny is added to our family and for us is like a child.
How is the work situation in Tenerife? Were you able to find the same occupation you had in Italy?
The first three months I worked as bartender in a English bar 9the only language I used to know pretty good and I could use here) and even if it was a very different job from mine, I was impressed and it helped me to find confidence with the place, with the tourism, the people and the world of work here. I didn’t work much but I was happy like that. In those months I really enjoyed life here: sun, sea, walking, rides around to discover new sites, sunset, parties.
The working situation here is pretty good, if you look constantly for a job, if you have experience and you know English and Spanish you can find a job in the “ostelleria” (bars, hotels, restaurants) or in the stores. There is a lot of tourism especially English and Russian, there is a lot of movement of foreigner people that come here to work for a while then change place or come back home, so cyclically the businesses hire and they always have job offers. The good thing is that here doesn’t exist a season: it is always hot and you work for twelve months except for May and November, which are the “dead” periods with less tourism, so the job you can find it in any field. The only flaw is difficult to work for the hours written on the contract… Most of the time you work for 8/9 hours a day with one day off a week. Another flaw is the average salaries are low. But the cost of living is not high, considering the Canary Islands are tax-free (7% VAT!!!). At the end things are compensated.
I came with the idea to learn Spanish and to come back to do my job of clerk that I really like in a contest from the Italian cities. After 4 months I was here, I had the first opportunity to work for Zara. Finish there, waiting for them to call me back, the store “Mango” called me instead, so I started to work. I started to speak Spanish, improved my English and restarted to speak French that I never had a chance to speak after the school, and after few months Mango’s owner because they were opening a Pandora’s boutique, she proposed to me to work there.
Today, after almost a year I am a responsible for the boutique, very happy or my life, with a great companion and our beloved big dog Sunny.
Can you talk about a typical day on the island?
Life here is very quiet, we live on the beach all year long, we live with little and you are happy to have the chance to enjoy of the nature, of the sun all the time, of a climate that makes your body feel good. And when you are tired of the sea in this island, there is Teide the highest mountain of Spain, half hour driving and you feel like you are in another island! And if you are tired of the heat you just need to go to North of the island and the temperatures drops 10 Celsius degrees! It’s weird how in a place so little ther are so many landscapes and microclimates… I really love this place for this reason (but I prefer to stay at South where is always hot!)
Our typical free days are spent at the sea, walking with the dog, lunch in typical restourants, happy hour, sunset… A really simple life made of few things but right to be good and live in the way we like.
Where do you see your future?
Don’t ask me how I see my future because I’m one sure of one thing: I’m not coming back. I know I want to keep living in this way… But someday I’ll might change places. For now I enjoy my life here and will see how the things will be, what the instinct will tell us. In Spanish they say NUNCA SE SABE (you can never say). The most important thing is peace and the internal stability, which I was looking for too long and I finally found it, and above all I found love, a thing that I was underestimate in the last years and instead I found out fundamental to live 100%… And at the end, but not the last thing, I think I finally found my place in the world (but still I don’t want to say it too loud!!)
